The International Women’s Day (IWD), the 8th March, is a special occasion marked around the world. Not only is IWD a celebration it also serves as reminder of the continuing struggle for equality that so many women face everywhere. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate that Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least ten decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. International Women’s Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men.
The IWD should be used as an occasion to review how far has the BiH society has come in its efforts to achieve gender equality, peace and development and should also be an opportunity to unite, network and mobilize all citizens for further meaningful change. Using internet and social media we are targeting and recognising the importance of youth as the crucial actors for achieving gender equality and full respect of human rights in BiH.
For the 8th March, UN Women BiH has produced an internet and social media campaign with the purpose of celebrating women and their contribution to the society. It aims to transmit a POSITIVE and empowering message and image of women and their role and contribution to the society.
Six women featured in the campaign are active in the fields of: science, art, sports, motherhood, media and business. This campaign focuses the attention on women that represent good examples to other women and men in BiH. By highlighting the stories of these successful women our aim is to talk both about their achievements and the obstacles they have had to overcome.
From the 2nd to the 8th March, images and messages related to successful BiH women will be published every day using facebook and this website. The creative team is made of Mensura Jazavcevic, winner of 2011 16 Day Campaign to end Gender Based Violence, Amer Kapetanovic, a prominent photographer in BiH, and UN Women BiH.
On the 8th March a short film created during the creation of the campaign will be launched containing personal messages of the six women to all women and men in BiH.
